Here are some Insider Tips to help make your cruise experience a smooth one.
Booking Tips
- Book early to find the best cruises at the lowest prices.
- Summers and holidays are cruising’s “Peak Seasons” with typically higher prices. Sailing during the non-peak seasons (like autumn) means better fares and greater availability.
- “Inside Cabins” don’t include a view, but they are less expensive. Use the money you’ll save to extend the length of your cruise. You’ll still get plenty of views from the common areas.
- “Balcony Cabins” include a private veranda and, though more expensive than ocean view and inside cabins, offer spectacular views en route to scenic splendor (like Alaska). They also guarantee intimacy for your romantic rendezvous.
- First time cruising? Not sure what all of the buzz is about? Book a 3-day weekend cruise to the Bahamas or Baja and see if cruising is right for you.
Planning and Preparing Tips
- Booking online is a convenient way to secure the best shore excursions, spa treatments and dining reservations. Check your cruise line’s website.
- You may arrive at your cabin prior to your luggage, so pack a carry-on bag with essentials. And always remember your travel documents, medication, sunscreen, sunglasses and camera. They can be pricey to replace onboard.
- Many cruise lines allow you to bring your own wine onboard, though a corkage fee may apply. Contact your cruise line for details. Of course, you can always pour your wine in your stateroom or, better yet, on your private veranda.
Onboard Tips
- Your vacation begins the moment you board your ship, so arrive early.
- Didn’t make shore, spa or dining reservations in advance? Make them the instant you board the ship.
- It really is ‘Safety First’ onboard. The staff will run a very important safety drill once every passenger is onboard. It may seem a funny way to start a vacation, but take it as seriously as your crew will.
- Port or Starboard? Relax and explore the ship. The nautical knowledge will come. (Hint: Port=Left and share the same number of letters.)
- Every evening, you’ll receive a newsletter with the next day’s information, from shore excursions to spinning classes. So sit back and plan another great day.
- Spa treatment fees are often reduced when in port. Skip an excursion and get a massage instead.
